The purpose of this website is to capture the experiences of those who lived in the former coal mining towns of Grundy and Will Counties in northern Coal City Public Library District is offering Internet access to this collection as a contribution to education.

The Herrin massacre took place on June 21–22, 1922 in Herrin, Illinois, in a coal mining area during a nationwide strike by the United Mineworkers of America (UMWA). Although the owner of the mine originally agreed with the union to observe the strike, when the price of coal went up, he hired nonunion workers to produce and ship out coal, as he had high debt in startup costs.

Coal has been mined in 76 counties of Illinois. More than 7,400 coal mines have operated since commercial mining began in Illinois about 1810; fewer than 30 are currently active. To detail the extent and location of coal mining in Illinois, the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) has compiled maps and directories of known coal mines.

The coal mining "boom" in the northern fields of Illinois really dates from 1864. Around the town of Braidwood, a farmer struck coal while drilling a well for water. For the next 50 years, thousands of people came into Will, Grundy, and Kankakee Counties to seek their livelihood in the coal mines.

Retired coal miner Charles Baker of West Frankfort holds a photo taken of workers in one of the local coal mines. Baker explains that not many current photos exist of inside mines .

During the years of rapid technological advancement, little attention was given to the serious adverse effects of coal mining. By the late 1970''s over 200,000 acres of land had been affected by surface and deep mining of coal in Illinois. Of this disturbed acreage, over 22,000 acres were identified as being "problem" acreage.
